In A1 of the course my confidence grew from task to task. I started off with the explainer task, and whilst I was relatively confident in my writing skills, I was not confident in the style of writing as the article had to brief and understandable to a wide audience. I picked a topic that I had learned about in my past studies, and on reflection I would probably change it if I had the choice now, but I was still proud of how it went. In the first few projects in A1 I tried to experiment with different topics and through that I would find some hesitation as in some topics I wasn't well-versed or necessarily passionate about like on my op-ed. In the studio interview project I ended up interviewing Owain from Panchiko, and that tested my communication skills massively. I left with a new-found confidence and that was my first interview of many. The investigative journalism project tested my ability to work in a team, and whilst I feel that I was able to do so, I broke away and did my tasks on my own with little communication with others as I was confident in my role, but I did engage in some group discussions and did contribute to a group project. After that big group project we started doing projects that were allowed for more creative freedom then others. When we did the podcast project I was originally going to do a movie review episode as I was in a group of people who didn't have many shared interests, however due to groups switching around I was able to do the first podcast about motorsports which I am most passionate and knowledgeable about. The first episode lacked preparation and structure but the second episode was better planned and I am very proud of how it turned out. From there on I began incorporating my college work into the work I was already doing on social media a few months prior. I established a clear target audience and designed my website and brand with that in mind.
The grade I received was 14/15 a distinction.
I got great feedback and learnt from this grade that I need to continue in the upward trajectory I am on, but there is still things I need to improve on.
AC1- Informing Ideas: Distinction
In reflection I have a strong understanding of the industry and use that to improve my work. My research is detailed and creates a solid foundation for the rest of my work. My ideas are interesting and scope and angle are considered when thinking about an idea. I also take into account the ways other people do it and take inspiration from that.
AC2- Problem Solving: Distinction
There is clear evidence of how I work through problems and overcome them. I have pushed myself out of my comfort zone and have displayed an excellent ability to deal with issues.
AC3- Technical Skills: Distinction
Good knowledge of the software and hardware and excellent at applying standard formatting. How I could exceed this is learn how to edit to an either higher level, and use all software and hardware available to optimise my work.
AC4- Professional Practice: Distinction
My confidence has increased and my initiative to work on my own as a journalist has increased. The quality of work I have produced has been impressive, I have created my own brand, and my attendance, punctuality and behavior is all good.
AC5- Communication: Merit
I make use of social media well. My target audience is clear and my website and podcasts are directed towards them. However contextualising my work would give me a higher grade, like posting videos with contextual detail, so I could add descriptions and summaries to achieve full marks.
Where I need to improve is particularly in communication. Everything needs to be clear and contextualised and I plan on doing this by making sure that my A2 documentary project has a contextual description when posted on Youtube and I will make sure I know what is important to make sure my work is in context. Apart from that I need to make sure that I am continuing the same level of work and constantly improving as I increase in confidence and experience.
