FIRST ATTEMPT REVIEW

200 WORDS

Sign Language Review

I would use just three words to describe the 2010 short-film ‘Sign Language’ directed by Oscar Sharp; heartwarming, profound and all-round silly!

First impressions would tell us this short-film appears to be a light-hearted humorous depiction of a sign-holder, and could almost be likened to an ad for being a sign-holder, but upon deeper inspection, the meaning seems to be more profound than once imagined.

In Autumn of 2006, sign-holders were banned on Oxford Street, after councils were given the power to ban mobile street signs from designated areas, so this film was most likely created in response to this.

Therefore, it displays the reality of the exploited, under-paid workforce, choosing to depict it in a satirical manner, so that it comes across more light-hearted and it is easier for the audience to watch.

It warmed my heart watching and gave a feeling of delight, as I saw the very human aspect, so it's clear Sharp is trying to humanise low-grade workers that we normally dehumanise, a message to value the hard-work of those who silently upkeep society.

One thing that also stands out is the fact that the main character has so much passion for his job, which most would feel is a massive privilege in the modern world.

I really liked this film, and definitely recommend it to anyone, as it caters to a wide audience. It's a nice laugh and uplifts your mood.
