Introduction to the Podcasting Studio

What type of microphone do we use in the studio and why?

In the studio a condenser microphone is used. A condenser mic has a thin diaphragm and is very sensitive so picks up more detail. The reason a condenser mic is used is to increase the detail of the recording.

How far should guests sit from the microphone and why?

They should sit as close as possible, with the mic around the height of their face when they sit down, and their chair as close to the table. They also need to speak close to the pop filter. This all makes the sound picked up louder and more detailed, so the recording is better.

What is a pop shield and why do we need them?

A pop shield is an attachment to a mic that blocks out breath from plosive sounds when someone is speaking, to make the recording more clear. We need them to massively improve sound quality.

What does DAW stand for? What is a DAW? Which one will we be using?

DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation. A DAW is a software for recording and editing audio files. We will be using Adobe Audition.

What is a channel? How many channels do we record to?

A channel is a seperate audio path, so the path which one piece of audio goes through. There are channels on audio interface and mic pre-amp. We record 4 channels, as there is 4 mics, each is recording a different mic.

What is input monitoring and why do we do it? How do we do it in Audition?

Input monitoring is when you monitor the audio from the recording live, so you hear what the people are saying in the recording studio. We do it in Audition by enabling the 'I' button, which means input monitor.

What is compression? Why do we use it for radio/podcasts?

Compression is leveling the voices and making the track even by turning down the level of some audios at certain parts. We us it to make radio/podcasts more consistent and have a regular noise level.

What is equalisation? Why do we use it for radio/podcasts?

Equalisation is making the different voices flow, by changing tones. We use it for radio/podcasts to make it easier to listen to, as the audio track will flow.

Which file format should you export your podcast to, and why?

WAV files instead of MP3, as WAV files provide better quality audio.
