Personal Statement:
With the developing world of video and broadcast on demand, I feel privileged to be in a time when television and film not only parallel each other, but with series and movies interloping, compliment each other. 10 Things I Hate About You, Clueless, and What We Do In The Shadows all show me how a world which seemed so far away from my reality, is actually more accessible then I had ever thought. Being a Derbyshire local I've watched as the silver screen has come to my doorstep with recent productions like Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning, which has given me the belief that I can be involved in this.
Over the past 2 years I have been studying a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Journalism and in Year 1 I have received a Distinction. At GCSE level I received 6s and 7s in every subject, my options were Spanish, History, Business and Psychology. From my previous studies I have gained transferable skills, such as research, communication, problem-solving and teamwork. I have also started an online course run by the University of London called 'Discover Acting' where I learn the fundamentals of acting, which has helped me start my acting journey.
I have worked on a number of projects during my time studying journalism. My biggest project has been my short documentary "Dare to Drive; A Woman's Race" about the fight to see female racing drivers reach the top levels of motorsport. The process of making this taught me a lot. I was entirely responsible for every stage of production. I produced, directed, starred in and edited the documentary, so this massively improved my confidence and ability in all aspects of making a film myself. It has given me the belief that I can make my own films and has increased my passion for visual storytelling.
I love writing and researching as a hobby. I find that it refines my creativity and I am
constantly learning and challenging myself to reach new heights. I have an immense passion for film and tv, and it consumes most of my free time. I love analysing characters and storylines and thinking about how they have an impact on the wider world and us as humans.
During my time at university I plan to take every opportunity possible aswell as making my own opportunities. I want to make the most of the course I study and I think that is evident
through the work I have done in my past studies. I will network in the industry to make
connections, and find work experience. I dream of being an actor and presenter, but to get
there I know that I need to gain valuable experience and contacts in the industry. The film
industry is very dynamic and can allow people to take up many different roles, which would be perfect for me. Therefore I hope to gain a multitude of skills to help me in my career.
Reflection:
I wrote a personal statement for my UCAS application. When writing I thought about the things that I want people to know about me and my work so far.
Intro: In the outro I had to give readers a first impression of me and my goals. I had to start it off with introducing the topic I wanted to discuss in relation to my further study, which is film and tv. As I want to go into the film and tv industry and make my own films I focused on referencing this throughout and giving examples of my work in Journalism to my future studies of film. I talked about the correlation between film and television and how intertwined they are in the modern era. As I want to go into both film and tv, this showed that the two were relevant to one another and that studying both would be incredibly useful. I not only talked about what I wanted to study but also where, I referenced that I am from Derbyshire and have noticed productions happening in my local area, so I want to study in Nottingham or Derby and be a part of their growing creative industry. I have applied for Nottingham Trent University, Derby University and the University of Nottingham, all of which have great connections in the industry. The filmmaking course at Trent is accredited buy BAFTA's Albert Education Partnership, Derby's film and high-end television production course has links to Malta Production Hub and Nottingham's course has a Hollywood internships programme.
Education: I talked about my qualifications, my GCSE subjects, my pending BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism and what I've learned from my studies that I can bring to my University education and my career. I also referenced extra learning that I have started to help me get a career in the industry, such as an online acting course. I want to show my interests through what I have done in my studies and how they are relevant. My course is somewhat different to journalism, but it is still in the media industry, so I wanted to display that my studies have encouraged me to follow my dreams and have already given me the opportunities to immerse myself into my passions and find what I most enjoy, like making my documentary and realising I enjoy making films, and the confidence to follow that passion as a career. I reference 'Dare to Drive; A Woman's Race' as an example of this and my best piece of work to date.
Hobbies and interests: I mentioned hobbies and interests that are related to the courses I want to study and how they could help me during my time at University. I talked about how I love writing and researching as these are valuable skills in the industry, aswell as that I am interested in analysing characters and storylines to see their impact on the world, which is part of what my studies may entail.
Outro: To conclude my personal statement I needed to inform readers of what I aim to do during my time at University and my career goals. I mentioned that I want to take every opportunity possible and make my own opportunities, and that I want to use university to gain experience, knowledge and connections in the industry. I also mentioned my overall goal of becoming and actor/presenter, but that due to the nature of the industry, I would explore a range of different career opportunities and gain skills applicable to a multitude of jobs.
Why did I write a personal statement? I wrote a personal statement to promote myself, whether that is to the universities I applied for, possible employers or my audience. It sums up my interests, hobbies, experience and goals all into one essay about why people should accept me onto a course, employ me or engage with my work. It is the first impression of me that I wish to give people.
