Jeanie Finlay Research

Updated: Feb 23

We watched a preview of Jeanie Finlay's 2023 documentary 'Your Fat Friend' which she directed after we had a Q+A with her. Jeanie Finlay is a British artist and filmmaker based at Broadway Nottingham. Other films she has directed include ‘Seahorse’ and ‘Orion: The Man Who Would Be King’. 'Seahorse' documents a transgender man's path to parenthood when he decides to carry a baby. Similar to 'Your Fat Friend' which charts the rise of Aubrey Gordon from anonymous blogger @yrfatfriend to a NYTimes best-selling author and successful podcaster, 'Seahorse' tells the story of one person and is very personal and intimate. Finlay's work seems to aim to encourage messy conversations about topics that people don't really think or talk about, maybe try and disengage themselves from. Her films show us the reality of those who maybe don't 'fit in'. She recently received the 'Chicken and Egg' award, previously being Emmy nominated for her documentary 'Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch' released on HBO about one of the biggest shows in the world, also has a few of her films nominated for awards by British Independent Film Awards (BIFA), winning a BIFA award with 'Orion: The Man Who Would Be King'.
