Kevin Hart’s new movie maybe No.1 on the Netflix but it's no block-buster

Kevin Hart’s latest movie, Lift on Netflix with an IMDb rating of 5.5/10 was the most watched English language film on Netflix the week of its release with 32.8M views. However, without its star-studded cast, this movie would have been unwatchable.

The movie follows master thief Cryus (Kevin Hart) as he and his team are recruited by his Interpol ex-girlifriend Abby (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), as they pull off a heist on an international passenger flight between London and Zurich. The aim; to steal $500 million in gold to stop a corrupt millionaire from endangering millions of people.

This action comedy movie is enjoyable and a nice saturday-evening watch with some snacks cuddled up on the sofa. It's not necessarily tense as most action movies can be, there can be moments where you worry for the characters, however as expected with most Kevin Hart movies it is light, entertaining and moderately funny, as it is an action movie it can’t be Hart’s usual level of comedy.

The comedy element of the movie is lacking, jokes seem to fall flat. Being rated a 12 makes sense, as it seems aimed towards that age range when it comes to humour. The movie seems to compromise some humour elements for action and vice versa.

The connection towards the characters of the movie and their journey throughout, a vital part of having a good movie experience, was there. There is character development of Cryus and Abby, which allows us to follow their story and be more concerned for them during the movie.

Whilst on the surface the movie is just an action with sprinkles of comedy, which follows the ever-so familiar cliches of the genre it finds itself in, is there more to it than meets the eye?

Entertaining and moderately funny...

In the movie the task at hand seems almost impossible, but somehow the con artists and Interpol agent Abby seem to make it very much possible. Maybe that's a show of how courageous and determined humans can be in the face of adversity, or a depiction of greed of those who have money and subsequently power. However, in terms of meaning, Lift is a shallow movie.

However, despite the fact that I enjoyed watching Lift (2024), it's not something that will be playing on my mind for weeks on, and there’s not much I can take away from it. To sum it up in three words; standard, predictable, and forgettable.

Would I recommend a movie to a friend? That depends. If my friend is looking for an easy-watch movie then yes I definitely would, especially if they are a fan of Kevin Hart’s other works. However, if they were a die-hard action fan, then no, as this movie is nothing for the likes of a James Bond movie.
