UK: Post Office Scandal continues:
The headline is "Post Office owner says Horizon system was used to frame him for his wife's murder". This is an example of a story from the whole scandal. The Post Office scandal is about the UK's largest miscarriage of justice, as more than 700 sub-postmasters were prosecuted on charges of theft, fraud and false accounting due to the faulty Horizon accounting system, this happened between 1999 and 2015. Many were sentenced to prison, and some took their lives. The impact on these sub-postmasters was massive. This story has been going on for a few decades, however it wasn't until recently when Mr Bates Vs The Post Office came on TV, that this story was in the public interest.
Novelty: Its the UK's largest miscarriage of justice, there is massive novelty in this story as it makes us feel bad. 3/5
Impact: It only really affects the sub-postmasters and their family and friends. It doesn't impact us all. 2/5
Human Interest: It has a lot of interest as it is a story of people against the government, david vs goliath, and the fact that it is depicted on a TV show means there is a lot of interest. 4/5
Legs: This story has been going on for about 20 years now so definitely has legs, and it has just now came to light in the public conscience, and now there is action being taken by the government and many victims sharing their story. 5/5
World: Iceland Volcano eruption:
There is an ongoing story about a Volcano eruption in Iceland, in the Icelandic town of Grindavik, and there has been lava spilling into the town, setting houses on fire. This is a live story (on the 15th January) that keeps developing as journalists learn more and more information about what happened and who has been affected.
Novelty: It doesn't have a novelty aspect as it is a natural disaster and they are more commonly happening and in the news due to climate change. However, it is a volcano eruption, which doesn't normally happen, they usually happen decades apart, and they are also extremely destructive. 3/5
Impact: The impact is mainly on people from Iceland and especially the people from Grindavik, because their houses are destroyed and their home town may be inhabitable so they may not be able to return. However, it may increase concern, as natural disasters seem more common. 2/5
Human Interest: Many will be interested in this story as stuff like this doesn't happen often, and may have big implications for the residents of the places affected. Also volcano eruptions can cause widespread problems like releasing more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. 3/5
Legs: It is likely to go on for 1 or 2 weeks as we learn about victims and the issues it has caused, however due to their being some bigger stories in the news right now, it will most likely disappear quickly. 2/5
Sport: NFL coming to Europe:
The NFL is set to come to Europe with games in London and Germany.
Novelty: It has novelty for American football fans as the NFL will be played in Europe for the first time however its not really that unique. 1/5
Impact: It only impacts NFL fans really, but people who live near the stadiums where it will be played may be impacted. 1/5
Human Interest: Only interesting for fans of the sport, doesn't have a human story in it, isn't appealing. 0/5
Legs: It doesn't really have legs, it will be talked about in the lead up to the matches and after, but it is like any announcement for a new location of a sport event. 1/5
Entertainment: Top Gun 3 announced:
Tom Cruise is set to return for a third Top Gun movie. The third installment of the franchise is in the early stages of production, with writing beginning. This is after Top Gun: Maverick became Tom Cruise's highest grossing movie, amassing a box office revenue of $1.49 billion.
Novelty: Both previous Top Gun movies have been very popular so the third one will probably be the same. However it doesn't have much novelty. 2/5
Impact: It will have an impact on movie fans and as it is a very popular series many will be excited. 2/5
Human Interest: It is a big movie series and Tom Cruise is a famous actor, so many will be interested but it won't hold their interest for long, as there are bigger stories. 3/5
Legs: It has legs as it people will follow the production process and each announcement and then there will be more news stories after its release. Whilst there will be bigger stories replacing it, it will still be on-going within the movie community for a while, as people make predictions and get excited. 4/5
